Use the room formula when the table has not been bought yet, or when the dining zone sits inside an open plan hall with no fixed edges. Use the table formula the moment a table is in place.
Where the two disagree, the table wins. A fixture scaled to the room but overhanging the table edge reads as a mistake from every seat, and everybody sitting down is looking straight at it.

Measure the narrower side of the table, not the length. For rectangular tables that is the width, for round tables it is the full diameter, and the fixture then sits between half and two thirds of that number.

That clearance does three jobs at once:
- It keeps sightlines open, so people across the table can see each other.

Work out how high to hang a chandelier over a dining table by subtracting rather than guessing. Take the ceiling height, remove the table height of roughly 75 cm, then remove the clearance you want. What remains is your maximum total drop, including the rod or chain.
A 9 foot ceiling gives about 200 cm of usable space above a 75 cm table. Take 85 cm of clearance and you have 115 cm left for canopy, rod, and fixture body combined.

Does Ceiling Height Change What You Can Hang?
Yes, and it usually rules out a design before style is even discussed. Ceiling height sets both the clearance above the table and the maximum body height of the fixture, so the dining room chandelier size you can physically hang narrows as the ceiling drops.

- Linear or rectangular. For tables over 150 cm. Aim for roughly two thirds of the table length, not the width.
- Cluster or multi pendant. Two or three smaller fixtures spaced evenly along a long table, each sized to about a third of the width.
- Cascade or tiered. Only for a dining area under a double height void, where the vertical drop has somewhere to go.
A single round fixture over a 180 cm table is the most common shape error. It lights the middle and leaves both ends dim, and no dining room chandelier size corrects that, because the fault is the shape rather than the diameter.

A six seater wants roughly 3,000 to 4,000 lumens overhead, on a dimmer, at 2700K. Aim for the higher end if the table doubles as a work surface, and treat the dimmer as essential rather than optional for evening meals.
Lumens alone do not tell the whole story. The same output spread across a wider surface produces a dimmer result, because illuminance falls as the lit area grows. A wide table therefore needs more light than a narrow one of the same seating count.
Split the total across the arms rather than buying one bright source. Six arms at 500 lumens each spreads light across the tabletop, where a single 3,000 lumen source drills a hot circle into the middle of it.

Ask for a colour rendering index of 90 or higher while you are at it. Below about 80, reds go flat first, which is exactly what makes a rosewood table look dull under an otherwise correct bulb.
How Do You Measure Before You Buy?
Take five measurements and the dining room chandelier size stops being a judgement call. Do it with a tape measure and the table already in position, because a plan drawing will not tell you where the existing ceiling point sits.
- Measure the narrower side of the table in centimetres.
- Multiply by 0.5 and by 0.66 to get your diameter range.
