Where Should Outdoor Wall Lights Go On A House?
Place outdoor wall lights where they light a task or an edge, not where they fill the wall evenly. The front door, the gate pillars, the garage approach, the steps and any change of level earn a fixture. Blank stretches of boundary wall do not.
Symmetry does most of the work at the entrance. A matched pair flanking the door reads as designed, while a single fixture on one side reads as an afterthought unless the door itself is off centre.

What IP Rating Do You Need In India?
Ask for IP65 as the minimum on anything the rain reaches, and IP66 within a few kilometres of the coast. A covered porch can drop to IP44, but only if wind driven rain genuinely never reaches the fixture, which in most Indian homes it does.
The IP rating for outdoor lights is two digits, and both matter. The International Electrotechnical Commission sets the first numeral for solid objects and dust on a scale to 6, and the second for water on a scale to 9.

Treat an unrated fixture as an indoor one whatever the listing says. Outdoor wall lights without a stated IP number on the box are the single most common cause of a fixture filling with water in the first monsoon.
How High Should You Mount An Exterior Wall Light?
Fix the centre of the fixture between 165 and 180 cm above the finished ground level. That puts the light source just above eye line for most adults, so it lights the path and the face at the door without shining straight into either.
Height is only half of it. Size the fixture against the door it frames, and keep the pair level with each other rather than level with a sloping path.
- Doors up to 210 cm: fixtures roughly 30 to 40 cm tall
- Doors of 240 cm or more: 40 to 55 cm, or the pair looks lost
- A single fixture beside a door: go one size up from a pair
- Set outdoor wall lights about 15 to 25 cm out from the door frame
- On a sloping approach, level the fixtures to the door, not the ground
Exterior wall lights on a boundary wall follow a different rule. There, mount lower, around 120 to 150 cm, and choose a downward throw so the light lands on the path instead of the neighbour’s window.
Which Materials Last In Monsoon And Coastal Air?
Powder coated aluminium and marine grade 316 stainless steel survive Indian conditions best. Untreated mild steel rusts within two seasons, and cheap plated finishes lift at the fixings first, where the coating is thinnest and the water sits longest.
Salt air is the harshest test. Within about five kilometres of the sea, anything other than 316 stainless, solid brass or properly coated aluminium will show corrosion inside a year.

Gaskets fail before the metal does. Check that the fixture uses a silicone seal rather than a plain rubber ring, and look for stainless fixings, because a steel screw in an aluminium body will corrode and seize.

How Bright And How Warm Should The Light Be?
Keep each fixture between 300 and 700 lumens, and the colour temperature at 2700K to 3000K. Exterior lighting fails from too much brightness far more often than too little, because a bright fixture at eye level blinds you to everything beyond it.

Three specification points are worth insisting on:
- A colour rendering index of 80 or higher, and 90 near planting
- Full cut off or shielded optics, so no light goes upward
- A replaceable lamp rather than a sealed LED body, where possible
Outdoor wall lights should also match the warmth of what is visible through the windows. A 2700K interior behind a 5000K exterior makes the house look cold from the road, which is the opposite of what an entrance lighting scheme is for. Carrying the same temperature through your indoor wall lights keeps the transition seamless.
How Do You Light A Gate And Boundary Wall?
Treat the gate as its own scheme. Gate lights mark the entry from the road, and they need to read from thirty metres away without dazzling anyone turning in, so a shielded downward throw beats an exposed lamp every time.
Work from these spacings:
- Fit a matched pair on the pillars, one either side, at equal height.
- Space any run along the boundary wall every 3 to 4 metres.
- Keep every lamp shielded so the source is never visible from the road.
- Put the gate circuit on a separate switch from the facade circuit.
- Add a photocell or timer rather than relying on anyone remembering.
- Leave a service loop of cable at each point for future replacement.
Motion sensors belong on the side and rear walls, not the entrance. A front door that flashes on every time a stray dog passes is worse than one that stays lit at 300 lumens all evening.
