How to Choose a Staircase Chandelier for Indian Homes

The stairwell is the only place in a house you see a light fixture from three different levels. That is what makes it the hardest room to get right and the most rewarding when you do.

How Do You Install One Safely?

Anchor through the false ceiling into the concrete slab above, and never into gypsum, plaster or a wooden batten. A staircase chandelier hangs over the one part of a house where a failure would drop several kilograms onto a hard flight of steps.

Work through this order:

1. Confirm the slab position above the void before anyone drills.
2. Get the fixture weight in kilograms in writing from the supplier.
3. Fit a load rated hook or plate anchored into the slab, not the ceiling board.
4. Cut the false ceiling neatly around the anchor rather than hanging from it.
5. Assemble the piece on the floor where you can reach every joint.
6. Raise it with scaffolding or a tower, never a ladder over open stairs.
7. Set the final drop with the fixture lit, judged from the ground floor.

Scaffolding is the line item people try to remove, and it is the one that should stay. Installing over an open stairwell means working above a drop, which is a different job from fitting a light in a bedroom.

Light the treads separately. The chandelier is the focal point of the void, but it throws light downward from a height, which leaves the edge of each step in shadow exactly where a foot lands.
