Ask for a bulb in an Indian shop and the first question back is always the same: pin or screw. The answer decides whether the lamp you carry home fits at all.

This guide covers the types of bulb holders used in Indian homes, what each one takes, and how to identify the fitting you already have before you order anything.

What Are The Main Types Of Bulb Holders?

Six types of bulb holders cover almost every domestic fixture sold in India: B22, E27, E14, G9, GU10 and G4. The first three are named for the cap style and its diameter, the last three for the gap between their pins.

Three further lamp holder types turn up occasionally. E40 sits in high bay and street fittings, B15 appears on some older decorative pieces, and G5 or G13 are the pin pairs at each end of a fluorescent tube.

What Is The Difference Between B22 And E27?

One twists, one screws. The difference between B22 and E27 is the fixing action and the diameter: B22 has two side pins that lock with a quarter turn, while E27 winds into a 27 mm thread until the contact at the base meets the holder.

  • B22 holds firm under vibration, which is why batten holders and fan lights still use it.
  • E27 is the international default, so imported fixtures and most LED ranges arrive with it.
  • Neither is safer than the other once the circuit is wired and earthed properly.
  • An adaptor converts either way, at the cost of extra length above the shade.

Both names come from the same rulebook. IEC 60061 sets the dimensions of lamp caps and holders so that international interchangeability holds, which is why a B22 bulb from any brand seats in any B22 holder.

What Do Batten, Angle And Pendant Holders Mean In India?

They describe how a holder is mounted, not the cap it accepts. A batten holder sits flat against the ceiling, an angle holder projects from a wall at roughly 45 degrees, and a pendant holder hangs on a length of flex.

Most are B22 in India, though E27 versions now sell alongside them. The types of bulb holders in an Indian hardware shop are usually named twice, once for the mounting and once for the cap.

  • Batten holder: ceiling mounted and flush, the default in older flats.
  • Angle holder: wall mounted and tilted, common in bathrooms, balconies and stairs.
  • Pendant holder: suspended on a cable, the base of a simple hanging light.
  • Ceiling rose: the connection plate a pendant hangs from, not a holder itself.

Ask for the mount and the cap together when you buy. A request for a batten holder alone gets you whichever cap the shop stocks most of, which is B22 more often than not.

Pendant holders carry a second consideration. The flex takes the weight of the lamp and the shade, so anything heavier than a light glass shade belongs on a fixture with its own suspension rather than on the cable alone.

Which Holders Do Chandeliers And Wall Lights Use?

E14, G9 and G4, roughly in that order of frequency. A chandelier bulb holder is smaller than a ceiling fitting because the piece carries several of them, and each lamp has to disappear behind a shade, a candle sleeve or a crystal arm.

Count the lamps as well as the cap. A twelve arm chandelier on E14 needs twelve bulbs that match each other in colour temperature, and mixing two batches is visible from the sofa.

G9 capsules deserve one warning. The looped pins push into a tight ceramic socket, and pulling a capsule out at an angle bends the loops enough that the next one seats badly, so pull straight down with the fixture supported.

How Do GU10 And MR16 Spotlights Differ?

By voltage, not by appearance. GU10 twists into its holder and runs on mains voltage, while MR16 uses two straight pins in a GU5.3 base and needs a 12 volt driver hidden above the ceiling.

Both lamps use the same reflector shape, so they sit side by side on a shelf looking nearly identical. The base settles it: a twist lock with slightly bulbed pin ends is GU10, and two plain straight pins is GU5.3.

  • GU10: mains voltage, no driver, the simpler default for a new false ceiling.
  • MR16 on GU5.3: needs a driver per fixture or per group, sized with headroom.
  • Dimming on a 12 volt spot depends on the driver, not on the lamp you buy.
  • A failed driver looks exactly like a failed bulb, so test with a lamp you know works.

Where a ceiling already runs 12 volt spots, changing the lamps costs far less than rewiring. Where the ceiling is still open, GU10 removes a component that can fail.

Does The Material Of The Holder Matter?

Yes, because heat ages a holder faster than current does. Bakelite is the cheapest and the first to go brittle, ceramic copes best with trapped heat, and brass sits inside decorative fixtures where it has to look right as well as conduct.

LEDs have made this less pressing than it was. The types of bulb holders that failed under a 100 watt incandescent rarely see more than 12 watts now, though the driver inside an LED lamp still pushes heat back into the cap.

  • Bakelite: fine for LED loads, prone to cracking near halogen.
  • Ceramic or porcelain: the choice for enclosed fittings and anywhere heat collects.
  • Brass and metal: used in chandeliers and pendants, usually with a ceramic insert.
  • Any material: a loose contact shows up as flicker long before it fails outright.

Enclosed shades are the case people miss. A sealed glass globe traps warm air around the cap, which is where a ceramic holder earns its price over a plastic one.

How Do You Identify The Holder You Already Have?

Switch the light off at the wall, take the bulb out, and look at its base. You can name the types of bulb holders in a flat in about a minute, because every cap is either stamped with its code or simple enough to measure.

  1. Turn the power off at the switch and let the bulb cool completely.
  2. Remove the bulb. A quarter turn and a drop out means bayonet.
  3. If it unscrews, measure the widest part of the thread with a ruler.
  4. A 27 mm thread is E27 and a 14 mm thread is E14.
  5. For pins, measure the gap: 4 mm is G4, 9 mm is G9, and 10 mm with a twist lock is GU10.
  6. Photograph the base and any printed marking before you leave the house.

Most caps carry the code moulded into the base or printed on the glass. Where it has worn away, a ruler settles it, since the numbering is a measurement rather than a model name.

What Goes Wrong When The Cap And Holder Do Not Match?

Either nothing fits, or something fits badly. A mismatched cap will refuse to seat, sit loose enough to arc at the contact, or work only through an adaptor that adds length the shade was never drawn around.

  • Adaptors solve the fit and create a taller, heavier joint above the shade.
  • A loose bulb arcs at the contact, which browns the holder and shortens the lamp.
  • Wattage limits still apply to the holder, even though LEDs rarely approach them.
  • Twelve volt caps are shaped so they cannot enter a mains holder, which is deliberate.

Buying by photograph is the fix. Caps that look alike in a listing are often two sizes apart, and E14 next to E27 on a screen is the single most common return.
